Beach safety in Sayulita, Mexico, is paramount due to various hazards present along its picturesque shores. Rip currents, accounting for over 80 percent of surf beach lifeguard rescues, pose a significant threat. These powerful currents swiftly pull swimmers away from the shore, necessitating awareness and appropriate action to escape their grasp. Shorebreaks, where waves crash directly onto the shore, can cause injuries, especially during rapid transitions from deep to shallow water. Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) can contaminate coastal waters, endangering swimmers and seafood consumers alike. Additionally, marine debris pollutes beaches, harming both ecosystems and visitors.
Our organization keeps a close eye on the water through our various programs improving the Beach Experience in Sayulita for our residents and visitors. We work closely with Proteccion Civil, and Sayulita Surf Rescue Team. We conduct annual training for our volunteer lifeguards with a 2 day program coordinated in conjunction with Proteccion Civil. This training focuses on water rescue, universal emergency hand signals, CPR, and AED. We have also fundraised and erected Lifeguard Towers on Playa Principal.
Beach Safety
Water quality and the subsequent beach advisories resulting from impaired quality are significant problems throughout the world. Surfers represent a culturally and economically important subpopulation of beachgoers who are subject to higher risks associated impaired water quality. This increased risk is related to the amount of time surfers spend in the water, the higher incidence of water ingestion, and the propensity for surfers to surf around storm events when water quality is the lowest. To keep then, our residents and tourists safe, Pro Sayulita engages a professional team to collect and test water in numerous river and ocean locations in Sayulita. We work with OROMAPAS and government entities to test the water seasonally four times a year. We contract MicroQuim Labs to conduct the lab work We often apply pressure and community leadership when issues arise that cause concern, and we make sure any repairs to our sewer emissor pipe are conducted promptly.
Water Testing
Depending on the project, Pro Sayulita works with various local environmental organizations, such as Eco Sayulita, Azul Sayu, Save our Surf and Ser Su Voz and our work has focused on environmental education, recycling programs, waste management, beach clean ups, and river bank restoration to preserve the pristine beauty of our natural surroundings and give back to the community; this is at the core of our ethos. We also financially support SayulitAnimals, a non-profit organization that runs a sterilization spay and neuter clinic to control our stray population of cats and dogs. We also work with local groups and state to engage in sidewalk enlargement, tree planting and other initiatives designed to enhance the appearance of the town. We have also provided landscaping and upgrades for the local school soccer fields.
Partnerships for the Environment
Pro Sayulita, working along with the Delagada, periodically cleans and power washes the streets in and around the Sayulita with the generous help from our donors and members. This helps to keep both humans and pets healthier! Sweeping and washing the streets effectively remove debris, trash, and pollutants from road surfaces, preventing them from entering storm drains and polluting our water.
Street Cleaning
Pro Sayulita donates to many local events in support of cultural events throughout the year, including the Day of the Dead Festival and “Celebrate the Beat” primary school’s dance program annually in March. We partner with El Centro Sayulita when we have to workshop with groups to produce decorations and installations. We host two annual BEACH SOCIAL events and invite the community and members to meet one another, and also touch down on any upcoming projects or fundraisers. We offer light refreshments, and also allow our partnering organizations an opportunity to speak to the community. We also support children’s sports and dance groups, such as C.A.M and SAYULITA KIDS IN MOTION Programs with fundraising efforts. To find out more about our events, click here.
